Mmm aiyoh nowadays alot of such bands are created for profit purposes mah. The members themselves may have aspired to achieve fame, but the driving force behind them is most probably money. Can you tell me who wants to form a boyband so that he or she can sing all those nice [not all the time nice somemore!] songs for people to listen to?
Frankly speaking I only appreciate those bands who play and write their own music. At least it's got more life. Like MayDay. Or Shin.
5566 is.. maybe it's not their fault lah. But somehow they seem more like money-making tools to me.
No offence meant to them though, but maybe to their manager

Fancy making so many merchandises out of one single concert or VCD or whatsoever. Talk about the concert... I attended it and it wasn't quite worth, cos it seemed more like a variety programme triple the programme time. =P
Then nowadays.. hardly any boybands that come out and hang around for a couple of years without having rumors or facts about them splitting up spread around.. sigh. -
turn off the images, turn up the volume and hear... nothing...

But I like to watch some Japanese boyband concerts haha because they're always so grand and spectacular. -
i don't listen to J-pop... so i dunno...
most boybands are manufactured in the studio, unable to write music or lyrics.. and are dependent on hype, good looks and slick choreography to cover up the fact that they can't sing or play...
just check out the crappy bands that people have forgotten and will under torture deny they were their screaming fans

Though the Backstreet Boys were pretty popular back then, now... not sure if they're still as hot. But they do look like they're overdoing it by "acting cool" and stuck with that tacky name "Backstreet BOYS". -
SMAP has been together for quite a long time lor..
and Japanese bands .. I think they're more solid than those boybands made in USA..
btw.. i kinda like bros (when i was at 6th grade i supposed).. -

they were famous for a while... then had one giant hype-generated album... then fired the non-brother... tried to go it alone without the hype machine and failed dismally with their 2nd album...

Secondly, they're original.
They play their own music - write own songs, play with own instruments. Now that's effort.
