Like all have said, he is definitely a legend, in Argentina NT and Fiorentina.
To be honest, i don't understand why they got relegated in the 92/93 season. They had a great squad. The likes of Batigol, Effenberg and Brian Laudrup surely are capable enough of surviving in Serie A. -

he will not be mentioned in the same breadth as pele, maradona, cruyff, backenbeuer or dare i say it, georgie best.
batigol is a very good player, no doubt. he is considered a legend in his birthplace, avellaneda and florence, but he's not in the class of players i mentioned above, and hence not a legend in the real sense. -

Perhaps he can qualify as a 2nd tier legend along with the likes of Gordon Banks, Hristo Stoichkov, Zico, Best, Rivaldo, Michel Platini, Gheorghe Hagi, known as The Maradona of the Carpathians. All very good individual players in their time and player people will continue to remember in years to come.
Maybe we can squeeze 2 more names in along with pele, maradona, cruyff and backenbeuer.
How about : Eusébio and Zinedine Zidane?
I know some people will disagree with Zizu but remember him 6 to 8 yrs ago... The player that brought back France first World Cup, scoring 2 goals against Brazil and also the European Cup. And even at 34, he almost did it again if not for the headbutt. -

Players like Bobby Charlton, Pele, Eusebio, Gerd Muller and such. They are pioneers.. way different from legends of their own right. They made Soccer their own and became household names. They kinda attained cult status when it comes to soccer.
Legends are known locally. Just like, Fandi Ahmad, QKS, Samad Allapitchay. Legends in singapore because they are known locally and maybe across the borders. But mention them to any english football honcho and they will just at you. Batistuta belong to the Fiorentina rat pack of Edmundo, Batistuta and Manuel Rui Costa. He attained legend status when he decided to help in Florence to get to Serie A and gave a huge sum to save Fiorentina when they were bankrupt. Samer goes to George Weah, Ravanelli, Gianfranco Zola, Cantona, Laudrup Brothers, Enzo Scifo and many more. Legends in their former grounds and countries.

in this case, i think the reference for batigol in this discussion/topic is to compare him with the creme de la creme, which i think he is not in the same league as the `legend' of pele and the likes... -

Batigol is a legend at Fiorentina but legend Football World? I doubt so.
If u think of football legend, most probably the names Pele & Maradonna will pop up in ur mind. Why?
Simple, cos they single-handedly brought Club as well as International honours.

I think none of us is categorizing him with the likes of Pele or Maradona. We are simply replying to the first post. For me, when I read it, it seems to me that he is implying that Gabriel Batistuta is a nobody. Is that the case????

Well, for me the very fact that we are here still mentioning their names long after they have retired is evidence that they have contributed to football in a big way.
Legends they certainly are but to what degree or heights is another matter of opinion i guess. Jader made a very good point there... The thread starter question is rather vague with the question mark at the end. Batigol is certainly a legend to some and a great player to alot.
People forgets that every year hundreds or maybe thousands of players retire from pro football... and these players will never get a mention from ordinary people like us cos we never knew them. So the fact that we are still talking about a player after he has stop playing shows that he did good enough for us to still remember him.
That in itself, we can consider him as a legend to football as people will still be mentioning his name in years to come. -

i got a feeling why pele and maradona are in the highest tier for legends is probaly because they led their country to world cup glory and they were the stars of that tournament.

it depends on how you define a legend.
batigo is definitely a legend to fiorentina and argentina. maybe not to football as a whole.
as far as i am concern a player is a legend to his club or country if he performs very well for a long period of time or broke the records.
alan shearer is a legend at newcastle
paulo maldini is a legend at milan
ian rush is a legend at liverpool. -

It's the contribution which Zocoss is talking about. If there's a topic titled "Legends of Fiorentina", the name Batistuta definitely pops out. If you think Kevin Campbell has contributed a lot to Arsenal, then yes he is a Arsenal legend to you. It's an opinion. Legend is based on opinions. If a player is remembered by tons of people for his contribution, these people will agree he is a legend. If he is not, then there will be debates coming out.
If being asked legends of Fiorentina, tons will point out Batistuta. Will you? If you don't, not that you are wrong, just that you are one of the minority who thinks that he is not. Likewise, if being asked legends of Arsenal, if you point Kevin Campbell, then again its not that you are wrong, just that you are again one of the minority that's all.
Or I say Antonio Bennarivo is a legend of Parma, do you agree with me? Ask the Parma fans, this will be one of the very first few names to be spilled out. No to you, but yes to us. Hope you get what I'm trying to say.
