  Do they even have lions in his country of origin?

  Then how did Sang Nila Utama know that animals such as lions existed?

  It's probably Tiger, cos India-type of countries got many tigers...and it's probably their heritage to brag and boast.

  Really, a Royalty should say Lion cos it's majestic, Tiger is an uncool word used by commoners.

  For all we know, they were the bragging masters that have been bragging since the beginning of stone age.

  The Bugis, Achinese, Arabs, Chinese, Thai, Malays, Javanese,  Indians, and even Dutch and Portugese were here before Stamford Raffles "found" the place.

  The map he used is the East Indies map, and shows the island as Singapur.

  The Johor Sultanate call the place Temasek.

  Who gave the Indian Sanskrit name?

  Sang Nila Utama, or is it attributed to him by folklore. There never was a lion on the island. Singa Pur could have meant the lion's den, a dangerous place, to the Indian map makers.

  Lions that once ranged from the Mediterranean to the north-eastern parts of the Indian subcontinent, unless the Chola dynasty of southern India took lions on their invasions into SEA, Sang Nila Utama must have seen a tiger which is more common in SEA. XD

  That is a myth and will remain to be a myth you decide if it is true.....the question is on the other hand if prince Sang Nila Utama saw a Tiger, I presume he would have known if it was a Tiger. I am sure they have recieved Tiger skin as royal gift they roam around in the Malayan Jungles.....you get what i mean...so it could be a hybrid.....that gone extinct. or the early merchant brought lion as part of the cargo for trade and one got loose.....

  Perharps need to check the Vatican library for any record of missing "lion" ......

  but there was One Lion lah.......it was a Stone lion right off Wonderland......lor....politically it might have to be lion so that my won't say SG stole the Lion from MY.....
